Middle East Airport Travel Delays

Recent sand storms have caused delays at Riyadh’s King Khaled International Airport (OERK/RUH).  Flights are being rerouted to other airports as a precaution, and delays are likely to continue over the next several hours. Officials are advising residents and travelers to remain indoors as much as possible.

Sand storms are very common in this region this time of year.  Delays can also be expected in Iran, Iraq and Qatar.  Travelers who plan to visit the region should monitor weather conditions and allow for additional time for more than likely airport and airline delays into this region.

JFK Airport, NY Runway To Close

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) already ranks near the top of the nation’s airports for delays.  You can expect more delays as the airport reported that the busiest runway will be closed from about March 1 - June 29, 2010 for a $204,000,000 makeover.

In 2008, the runway handled approximately 143,000 takeoffs.  “William DeCota, who is the director of aviation for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, says airlines have been asked to revise their schedules” as the three other runways will have to handle the additional traffic.

March is a busy time for international spring break mission trips and June begins the summer short-term mission trip season.  As an international traveler who has flown in and out of the JFK, I would recommend leaving plenty of time for any layovers if your itinerary involves JFK or better yet, Chicago, Washington D.C. or Atlanta airports might be better alternative for as your international hub.
